It was important for us to have Rose Ferraby at Carbon Calling as our first artist in residence, to bring creativity to the conference as a way of doing things differently.
She produced this powerful collective poem from attendees' sentiments and thoughts collected on the main conference day about 'their farm'.
The Calling
My farm is a pirate ship
a life raft,
a livelihood and a gift,
Where history and possibility
Hold fast in terra firma
Unfolding in miniature.
For here, beneath my feet
Is my world,
Another world,
The world.
We make love in the fields,
Converting light to uncommon ground,
And a cartography of grazed rhythms
Ruminates seasons in
A palette of grass and sward.
I want my land to buzz,
To be a raucous thrum of miraculous multitudes,
With the crack clack of jackdaws,
The fruity fluty blackcap,
And the scream of swifts, an urgent reminder
That the land gives hope,
Gives life,
Gives space
That the land gives.
That the land gives
And the future is up to us.
