JAN. 26 Words by Emily Leech at CSX Carbon.
At CSX, we support the financial and environmental sustainability of rural land enterprises. Enabling landowners and farmers to monetise carbon and biodiversity from their land, empowering them to obtain a fair financial return for environmental management and provide businesses transparent, validated carbon & biodiversity credits.
The Natural Capital markets need quality-assured carbon, biodiversity and nature metrics. CSX apply a scientific approach to the digital twins we create, using data analysis to add value to environmental earth observation data. Connecting the dots between landowners and businesses to deliver nature-based solutions. Using data to facilitate positive trading, measuring and monitoring the impact these solutions have over time.
CSX support landowners on the journey to understand, assess and unlock new income opportunities from the natural assets present on their farms, and from changes to land management practices. Farmers remain in control of their land, their data and how their environmental assets are used.
Be The Change Project
As part of the Be The Change Project CSX will demonstrate how increasingly, collection, assessment and sharing of environmental data is becoming essential for farm businesses. Not just for access to environmental markets, to also meet impending supply chain and finance requirements. Such as TNFD, TCFD and CSRD.
Large food businesses and processors are now asking for clear evidence of sustainability performance, including land management practices, carbon levels and biodiversity outcomes. Having reliable, independently verified data puts landowners in a stronger position to respond to these demands, future-proof their farm businesses and ensure the environmental value a farmer creates is appropriately recognised in the supply chain.
CSX works directly with landowners to build a clear picture of the natural capital across their land. We carry out detailed biodiversity and carbon assessments, including vegetation surveys, bird acoustic monitoring and soil and gas analysis. Using drone surveys, we create a digital twin of each farm, bringing all of this information into a single, clear record that, when surveys are repeated, demonstrates measurable progress over time. This provides landowners with a robust audit trail that can support environmental payments, supply-chain reporting and long-term land management decisions.

CSX is working with Carbon Calling to support three farms as they explore how natural capital can fit within their farm businesses. We will deliver a tailored natural capital, carbon and biodiversity, baseline assessment, opportunity mapping and business case assessment for each landholding, designed around the specific habitats and farming practices in place.
We will support the landowners through the assessment and planning of works to deliver potential opportunities, including the development of workable land management and business plans. CSX will guide landowners on the carbon and biodiversity opportunities available to them, how these can be integrated alongside food production, and the monitoring approaches needed to provide an accurate, non-subjective record of environmental change.
